Problem Statement
The Bachelor of Design graduating class needed a unifying identity for their exhibition that represented the students. The challenge was to design a brand identity that felt original and flexible enough to be applied across multiple platforms, like print to digital materials and signage. Since this identity would be the face of the grad showcase, it had to capture the graduating year and their chosen theme: VANTA.
Research
What is VANTA: Vanta takes its name from Vantablack, an ultra-black coating that absorbs 99.965% of light. Just as Vantablack creates a void where light disappears, Vanta symbolizes the knowledge absorbed by the graduating class.
GOALS: The goals of this project are to create a cohesive grad showcase for the graduating class of 2025. The variables for the show include a visual identity with a logo and a toolbox that provides guidelines for the usage of visuals. The visual components include posters, promotional and web materials, wayfinding, personal ID, photography, and illustration.
VISUAL IDENTITY: The graduating class asked for a system that avoided gradients or a strictly black palette. The design style chosen was experimental and textured by blending traditional and digital media while remaining abstract. Different textures, that represented each grad, were created through ink experimentations, these texture where then cut into abstract shapes and layered to create three kaleidoscope patterns.
Process work
Logo
The horizontal and vertical wordmarks are made from linocut letterforms, and the logomark represents the kaleidoscope shape.
Digital Application
For digital applications, recurring textures were carried into social media posts with dynamic layouts and a unified web banner.
Motion Graphics
Print Application
A variety of print materials to help people connect with the grad and navigate the grad show space. From business cards and name badges that make networking easy, to name tents for meetings and wayfinding signage that guides visitors. Each print piece cohesively uses the Vanta branding.
