Vanta takes its name from Vantablack, an ultra-black coating that absorbs 99.965% of light. Just as Vantablack creates a void where light disappears, Vanta symbolizes the knowledge absorbed by the graduating class.

Project Overview

The goal of this project is to create a cohesive graduation showcase for the Class of 2025. The system includes a visual identity, a logo, and a design toolbox that provides clear guidelines for applying the visual language across all materials, including posters, promotional and web assets, wayfinding, personal ID, photography, and illustration.

The graduating class requested a system that avoids gradients and a strictly black palette. In response, an experimental and textured visual identity was developed by blending traditional and digital processes while maintaining an abstract approach. Individual ink-based textures were created to represent each graduate, then cut into abstract forms and layered to form three kaleidoscope-inspired patterns.

Logo

The horizontal and vertical wordmarks are made from linocut letterforms, and the logomark represents the kaleidoscope shape.

Eighteen handmade textures were created to represent each of the Eighteen graduates. These individual pieces were then transformed into overlapping kaleidoscopic compositions, which form the core visual identity of the grad show.

Three kaleidoscopes were created using cyan, yellow, and magenta. When overlapped, they form vibrant and dynamic colour arrangements. The CMYK palette was chosen to showcase the nature of digital and print design.

Every letter in the heading typeface was hand-carved and stamped using lino cut. The prints were then scanned and digitally arranged to create the logo and the individual names of each graduate. Sticking to the graduates' request for a blend of textural handmade craftsmanship and digital design.

Our approach to the Vanta Grad Showcase brand identity was selected as the official branding direction.
