Project Overview

4 million pairs of eyeglasses are landfilled every year in North America and 1.25 billion do not have access to glasses when they need them for vision impairments.

This project is a full-circle design that lets customers return unwanted glasses using an eco-friendly box, with instructions guiding the process so the glasses reach those in need. Inspired by retro aesthetics, it uses vibrant colours and abstract shapes referencing eyes, frames, and focus. The series includes three cohesive package designs representing different prescription strengths, each with its own pattern.

Logo

The word Ophelia comes from Greek origins, meaning to “aid,” or “benefit.”

The logomark reflects this through the subtle asterisk/footnote symbol, representing guidance, added clarity, and support, while the typeface nods to traditional book fonts and timeless literature.

For the package illustrations, the circles represent eyes and points of focus, while the inner squares resemble lenses or frames. Two contrasting dots act as additional focal points, reinforcing ideas of clarity and attention. The subtle noise blur represents both sight and blurred vision, reflecting varying levels of perception and visibility.

Social Media

The social media series features abstract photography designed to engage viewers, paired with simple slogans and minimal text. One post explores typography hierarchy by displaying the logo in varying sizes, inspired by optometrist charts and posters, creating a strong focus on scale, clarity, and visual rhythm.

Each package features a subtly different pattern and colour variation based on the prescription strength.

An instruction system built into the packaging guides users to insert their old glasses into a designated sleeve within the box. Once placed inside, the packaging is sealed, returned for recycling and redistribution, where the glasses are repaired and then gifted to someone in need.
